Vol. 47 · No. 12 — Established 1978
Hand-tested cinema and photography gear from a working shop — not a warehouse. Every body inspected, every shutter count verified, every order shipped from the same Smith Street address our founder unlocked in November 1978.
From the bench
Forty-seven years ago, Simon Gold hung a hand-painted sign above 412 Smith Street and started selling Leica M3s to the documentary photographers who worked the streets below. The shop is now run by his daughter, Rachel Gold-Mendez, with two factory-trained technicians at the in-house repair bench — Canon CPS Gold, Nikon Authorized — and a roster of working photographers who stop by after a job to inspect the day's intake.
A used body averages 47 minutes at the bench across 38 checklist points: shutter count pulled and verified against a separate cycle test, sensor inspected under a 10× loupe, autofocus calibrated against a chart at three distances, all ports and contacts cleaned, firmware updated to the current manufacturer's release. We do not list a body we would not hand to a wedding photographer the next morning.
Fresh off the bench
Four bodies inspected, cycle-tested, and listed in the last seven days. Shutter counts verified against the manufacturer's database before the price tag went up.

In-house curation
Each of these is a camera, lens, card, and cage combination hand-matched by our in-house DP, an 11-year industry veteran. Bundles ship at a modest discount to the parts total — but the value is the matching, not the markdown.
Vetted for a two-camera doc crew shooting 4K 120. Cage clears the XLR top handle. The 320GB card holds 92 minutes of 4K 120 All-Intra — enough for a long interview day.
The kit our own shooters carry on a wedding Saturday. Both lenses cover the day from ceremony through reception; the dual cards give a redundant backup at the altar.
One body, two zooms, and a V-mount for a full shoot day — covers 8K video down to wildlife telephoto without swapping rigs. The plate accepts a 99Wh brick for unhurried travel days.
Our DP's go-to indie-feature rig. BRAW recording to dual SSDs gives an instant backup; the Tilta cage clears the EVF mount for a shoulder build on day three of a 12-day shoot.
“A camera shop is only as good as the person on the bench. Anybody can move boxes from a warehouse to a porch. We test every body because the next shooter who buys it has a wedding, a documentary, a feature — and they need the thing to work on the first frame.”
